Be an Angel Day: How You Can Support Service Members, Veterans, and Military Families

Every year on August 22, Be an Angel Day encourages people to perform small acts of kindness and offer support to those in need. At Soldiers’ Angels, that mission is part of our daily work, which is why every year on this special day, we invite the world to join us in showing gratitude to those who have served or are currently serving.

Whether it’s sending a care package, baking homemade goodies, or volunteering at a VA hospital, there are many ways you can be an angel for Service Members, Veterans, and Military families.

What Does It Mean to “Be an Angel”?

Soldiers’ Angels offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities to support the Military-connected community. These opportunities are flexible and accessible, allowing individuals, families, schools, companies, and organizations to get involved in meaningful ways. Here’s how you can be an Angel volunteer!

Support Deployed Service Members

Deployed Service Members often go without mail or reminders that someone back home is thinking of them. You can change that.

  • Adopt a Service Member: Provide consistent support by sending monthly letters and care packages to an individual currently deployed throughout the duration of their deployment. Learn more here.
  • Send Baked Goods: Brighten a Service Member’s day with a taste of home by mailing fresh, homemade treats. Learn more about this opportunity here.
  • Write Letters or Cards: Share words of encouragement for birthdays, holidays, or just because. A heartfelt message goes a long way for someone serving far from home. Learn more about this opportunity here.
  • Support our special campaigns: We host collection drives throughout the year to ensure Service Members and Veterans have what they need and feel supported. From socks in the Spring to Winter items in the summer and holiday items for the holidays, there’s always something going on that you can contribute to. Learn more about our special campaigns here.

Support Veterans

For many Veterans, especially those in VA hospitals or living in vulnerable conditions, your time and care can provide connection and comfort.

  • Volunteer at a VA Hospital: Support Veterans through in-person events, patient visits, and holiday or seasonal activities.
  • Volunteer at a Military & Veteran Food Distribution: Join us at one of our eight Military & Veteran Food Distributions, getting groceries to Veterans and Active Duty Service Members in need.

Learn more about our Veteran Support opportunities here.

Support Military Families

The families of Service Members serve in their own way—managing life at home while their loved ones are deployed.

  • Celebrate New Babies: Send virtual baby showers with essential items to expectant spouses of deployed Service Members. Learn more about this opportunity here.
  • Offer support to caregivers: Offer strength and encouragement to female caregivers through cards, and Blessing Boxes filled with self-care items. Learn more about this opportunity here.
  • Adopt A Family for the holiday season: Help Military families in need during the holiday season by providing gifts for the children and a gift card towards their holiday meal.

Be an Angel Today and Every Day

Be an Angel Day reminds us of the power of kindness. But for the heroes we serve—Service Members, Veterans, and their families—support is needed every day of the year.

At Soldiers’ Angels, volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. Your compassion, time, and generosity have a direct and lasting impact. So take the leap. Send a letter. Sign up to volunteer. Host a collection drive. Be an angel for someone who has sacrificed so much. Because small acts of kindness can make a world of difference.
