As Soldiers’ Angels continues to grow, we know questions may come up. To help, we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions, so you can find quick and reliable answers.
Getting Started
Soldiers’ Angels provides aid, comfort, and resources to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Veterans, and their families. Thousands of Soldiers’ Angels “angels” volunteers assist Veterans, deployed personnel, and their families in a variety of unique and effective ways. To find out more about our organization, please visit our website: Soldiersangels.org
Soldiers’ Angels offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, both virtual and in-person, allowing you to give back in a way that fits your schedule. To get started, you’ll need to register and become part of our community of volunteers. Please click here for more information on registering and for step-by-step instructions.
To be a part of our team, we require a verification process to help us verify the identities of those who are registering in order to help protect our Service Members and their information. There are two options for the verification process: make a small donation, as little as $1, or a background check, which will require you to provide your SSN.
This policy was implemented due to previous instances of misuse, where individuals registered under false identities and sent inappropriate materials to Service Members. While we actively blocked such users, without a validation method like a credit card, they could easily re-register under a different name.
We require reporting for two key reasons. 1. We handle sensitive information, and as a nonprofit, it is crucial to know who is involved and in what to prevent misuse or inappropriate behavior. 2. Running and funding our programs requires tracking participation. We need accurate data on letters sent, service members supported and overall engagement to measure impact, set goals, and meet nonprofit reporting requirements.
In most cases, volunteering with us counts as community service, but we need to be informed in advance to track hours and provide the proper documentation. Approval also depends on what the community service is for. For certain legal offenses, we may not be able to accommodate the volunteer. If you are local to San Antonio, please contact our office at (210) 629-0020.
Information for Volunteers
To receive addresses and related information, you must first become a verified angel. This is a safety and security measure for our troops.
Please send or deliver holiday stockings to the base, unit, deployed Service Member, or VA you selected via the Soldiers’ Angels online volunteer portal.
To adopt a deployed Service Member, you must first become a verified Angel Volunteer. Once verified, log into the online portal and navigate to “Volunteer Opportunities” Then use the dropdown menu to filter by “Deployed Adoption Opportunities”. Once you have found a deployed Service Member you wish to adopt, select the member and select “Volunteer for Program Engagement”.
Someone from the organization would need to sign up to be a verified angel. We have to verify the identity of the person sending items for the safety and security of our troops. Once verified, that person can volunteer to adopt a deployed Service Member.
There are several activities children could participate in. The first step would be to have an adult become a verified angel. Then choose what you’d like your child to do.
Travel sized hygiene items are always appreciated but other items that are commonly requested are individually wrapped snacks like beef jerky, nuts, packages of crackers, socks (they love getting socks), books, magazines, etc. Here is a link to our blog that list all the commonly requested items.
While we don’t have a specific program for collecting and sending holiday cards due to limited capacity during the holidays, there are a couple of programs where sending cards is appropriate: Holiday Stockings for Heroes, and Cards of Support.
Please check out our candy map which displays the many locations across the country that are collecting candy for Soldiers’ Angels. You can click on a location and drop off your candy at that collection site.
We don’t collect coupons but there are a couple of organizations that do. Try the Krazy Coupon Lady and also expired coupons for overseas military on Facebook.
It is allowed; however, you will need to complete an honorary angel application that summarizes your fundraising efforts. This paperwork must be completed before you can use our name in your fundraising efforts. You can also learn more about fundraisers on our website page here.
Military and Veteran Food Distributions
For information on our monthly food distributions, visit Military and Veteran Food Distributions page. On this page, you can sign up to receive email and text notifications. Each month, a registration link is sent to veterans in need of supplemental food assistance.
Registration fills up quickly, so signing up through the provided link is the best way to secure a spot. If you’re unable to access the internet to register, please call our office at (210) 629-0020 for assistance.
We do not ask for your SS#, but for the last four digits of your SS#. This is to help us track people in our system. Since we serve over 1 million Service Members and Veterans across the country and around the world, we have people with the same name in our database who may not live in the same location. So– Joe Smith may be in Orlando but we may also have a Joe Smith in Denver and maybe even a Sgt. Joe Smith who is currently deployed in the Middle East. Adding the last four helps us ensure that we don’t accidentally combine accounts or mix up who is who.
We ask for income information to ensure we are giving priority to those who need it most. Soldiers’ Angels Military and Veteran Food Distributions were created to provide food assistance to low-income, homeless, and at-risk Service Members and Veterans. The need from the low-income, at-risk, and homeless community is incredibly great and is growing very quickly in each of the markets we serve. We follow income thresholds as determined by each local food bank and prioritize those in attendance based on need
Unfortunately, we are unable to hold food beyond the event time, as all food is distributed on-site to attending Service Members and Veterans.
At the time this article was written, three undocumented no-shows within a calendar year will result in removal from our notification list. With thousands of Service Members and Veterans in urgent need of food for their families, it is essential that every available spot goes to those who can attend.
If you sign up but can’t make it, please notify us so we can offer your spot to someone in need. We understand that things do come up and may impact your ability to attend. As long as you notify us at least 24 hours in advance of the event that you will not be attending, it will not be counted against you. Your consideration helps ensure no food—and no opportunity—is wasted.
Requesting Assistance & Support
We do not provide financial assistance but there are many organizations that do. Here is a link with a list of resources. We hope this helps. https://soldiersangels.org/where-to-turn-in-times-of-crisis/
We are not involved in public policy or legal support. For public policy we suggest WWP and for legal support the Yellow Ribbon fund.
The eligibility requirements for the Holiday Adopt-A-Family program are clearly outlined on our Adopt-A-Family page and may change from year to year. Please be sure to review these eligibility requirements each year before you apply for the program. Read the eligibility requirements here.
You will receive an email from our team with one of the following: additional information needed to process your application; application is approved if all documents and requirements are met; or disapproved if the Service Member or Veteran does not meet the eligibility criteria for the program.
We cannot guarantee how long it will take to hear back about the program. It depends on how many applications are ahead of yours and how close to the December holidays you registered for support.
Please do not call the office to inquire about the status of your application!! We receive an overwhelming number of phone calls during the Adopt-A-Family program and our office staff have a hard time answering all of the calls. The fastest way to reach out is to email: [email protected]
Any other questions about Adopt-A-Family may be addressed in our Adopt-A-Family FAQ section.
You can request a card here. For birthdays we request a minimum of a 3-week notice so that our angel volunteers can send cards that reach your Service Member or Veteran in time
We are not able to share GoFundMe links on our page.
