Honoring Our Four-Legged Heroes: The History of K9 Veterans Day
March 12, 2026
Every year on March 13, we pause to recognize K9 Veterans Day, a tribute to the incredible service and sacrifice of Military Working Dogs (MWDs). These loyal, courageous canines have stood alongside our Service Members in some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable, using their extraordinary skills to detect threats, save lives, and forge unbreakable bonds with their handlers.
At Soldiers’ Angels, we know that service comes in many forms—including paws, wagging tails, and unwavering loyalty.
Why March 13 Matters
K9 Veterans Day is observed on March 13 because it marks the anniversary of the U.S. Army’s launch of the War Dog Program during World War II. On that date, the Army officially began training dogs to serve in combat roles—what would later become known as the K-9 Corps. These early war dogs, many of them recruited from family pets through organizations like Dogs for Defense, helped with sentry duty, scouting missions, message delivery, and more. Their contributions proved invaluable and laid the foundation for decades of service ahead.

From World War II to Modern Day
Since World War II, Military Working Dogs have served in every major U.S. conflict—from Korea and Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. Their roles have expanded beyond sentry and messenger duties to include:
- Explosive detection
- Search and rescue
- Patrol and protection
- Tracking and narcotics detection
These four-legged warriors have saved countless lives by finding hidden threats and alerting their human counterparts to danger long before an explosion or ambush could occur. Their acute senses and dedication make them indispensable partners in protecting our troops. Read more about their history and role here.
But perhaps their greatest contribution is the bond they share with their handlers—a level of trust and partnership forged in the most intense environments. These brave dogs are true members of the Military family.
Honoring with Action
Every year during National Pet Week and Military Appreciation Month, we host a collection campaign for Military Working Dogs. This special campaign invites supporters to show appreciation for these heroes by donating dog-specific items that are packed into care packages for deployed Military Working Dogs and their handlers.

How to participate
- Donate supplies like large food and water bowls, sturdy toys for power chewers, grooming tools, and plenty of poop bags—items handlers specifically request to help care for their K9 partners in the field.
- Make a financial contribution to help cover the cost of shipping these care packages overseas. It costs about $25 to send one K9 care package.
- Shop our Amazon wish list or organize a local care-package collection to rally friends, family, and community members around this cause.
Whether you donate supplies, share the campaign with your community, or contribute financially, your support helps ensure that no Military member goes unloved—especially those with four legs and a tail.
Military working dogs are not simply animals trained for specific tasks; they are Veterans. They face dangers alongside human troops, provide comfort during stressful deployments, and save lives through their service. K9 Veterans Day reminds us to honor that legacy. This March and every month, let’s salute these brave canines for their courage, dedication, and the irreplaceable role they play in protecting our nation.
