8 Years and 5,000 More Stockings

11/14/12

For the 8th year in a row, Angels in Georgia have gathered, stuffed and packed over 5,000 stockings for the troops!

About 65 volunteers completed the effort in record time, stacking 14 pallets' worth of Christmas stockings in only 5.5 hours.  Dubbed a "packing party," the event included a DJ who donated his time to motivate everyone with music and a trivia contest, and a locla Chick-Fil-A that donated lunch.  Each volunteer also received a special "Soldiers' Angels, Team Georgia" garden flag as a thank you from Soldiers' Angels.

Most of people at the packing party were Soldiers' Angels, but friends, coworkers and family were recruited as well.  Community Network Coordinator Dianne's husband gathered some of his co-workers from Covidien, which also lent the tables used at the packing party

Donations for the drive came from organizations and companies throughout the area, including cookies from Alabama Girl Scouts; socks from Feetures and other sources; a grant from Home Depot; 5,000 camo koozies and 500 pairs of socks from Southeast Mortgage (who also had five employees at the packing party); and collections from the public through donation boxes placed at the Douglas County Georgia Courthouse, Walmart and other locations.

In addition, Assured Comfort Heating & Air opened their warehouse to the volunteers to store supplies and pack the stockings.  Southeast Mortgage did a big drive for socks, as did Georgia Power.  "We have a lot of cool donors around here," said Dianne.

The stockings, packed in boxes and estimated to total 10,300 pounds, will be taken to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport at no charge by trucking company FLG Express.  A military air transport will then whisk them from Atlanta to troops who will be celebrating another Christmas in Afghanistan.

Congratulations to Diane, her fellow Angels and all the members of the community who contributed to this amazing tradition!
