Honoring Our Heroes

32,882 Veterans are experiencing homelessness in the United States.* These brave men and women who once stood on the frontlines often find themselves fighting new battles of financial instability, mental health challenges, and limited access to essential resources. Transitioning from Military to civilian life is a hurdle many Veterans struggle to overcome. This is why Soldiers’ Angels participates in Stand Down events held across the country, helping thousands of homeless Veterans who are in need of support.

This November, Soldiers’ Angels was proud to be a part of the San Antonio Stand Down event hosted by the National Veterans Outreach Program (NVOP). At the event, we had the privilege of speaking with Albert.

Hear his story in the video below or watch it on YouTube.

Sergeant Albert Gonzo” Gonzales

Albert, a proud Veteran, shared his story of service, struggle, and the role organizations like Soldiers’ Angels and the NVOP play in uplifting those who have served our country.  During his time as an infantryman, Albert sustained injuries while deployed in Iraq. After undergoing multiple surgeries, he was medically discharged.

“I didn’t want to get out, I wanted to stay in, and I had no choice but to get out, ” Albert reflected on the difficult time. The transition from military to civilian life was challenging, particularly during a time when resources for Veterans were limited. Now Albert encourages all Veterans to participate in events such as the Stand Down.

“I was diagnosed with cancer, I’m raising a family. I can’t afford too much, you know, so I need help. I’m not embarrassed to say I need help” expressed Albert, adding, “You deserve it. You worked hard for it”. Despite his health challenges, Albert makes it a priority to attend these events whenever he can, knowing firsthand the difference they make.

The Stand Down

Every year, the NVOP hosts a Stand Down event to provide support for homeless and at-risk Veterans. These events offer more than basic necessities like food, clothing, and health screenings; they offer hope. Sergio Dickerson, Retired Colonel and President/CEO of NVOP, explains that the Stand Down is a place “Where Veterans see their community supporting them and where the community sees the Veterans they serve”.

For Veterans like Albert, these events are a lifeline. They address immediate needs while reminding participants that they are not alone in their struggles.

Show Your Support

Veterans like Albert remind us of the sacrifices made for our freedom and our collective responsibility to support them in return. As Albert says, A Veteran never gives up. A Veteran fights, fights to the very end”. Despite ongoing efforts, significant gaps in resources for Veterans remain. By standing together, we can ensure no Veteran fights alone.
