Your First Food Distribution: A First-Timer’s Field Guide
September 3, 2026
Volunteering at a food distribution for the first time? You might be wondering what to expect, what to wear, or what you will actually be doing. That’s why we created A First-Timer’s Field Guide to help you feel prepared and know what to expect before your first food distribution.

You don’t need to memorize anything or have previous experience. This guide is simply here to help you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to jump in.
Before Your First Food Distribution
After you register, watch your email for important event information. Your registration email will include details about the event, including the location and time. If you have not yet created your volunteer profile, you may also be asked to complete that step.
You do not need to figure everything out ahead of time. Your team will provide instructions when you get there.
What Should You Wear?
Food distributions are hands-on volunteer opportunities. You may spend several hours standing, walking, bending, lifting, sorting, and moving food.

For this reason, wear:
- A Soldiers’ Angels shirt, if you have one.
- Comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.
- Closed-toe shoes that are good for standing.
- A rain jacket or sunscreen if needed.
Food distributions can take place outdoors, rain or shine, so check the weather before you leave home.
What Should You Bring?
You do not need to bring much. A water bottle is welcome, and you can bring a snack if you would like. Depending on the event, water and snacks may also be provided.
Otherwise, just bring yourself and a willingness to help.
At The Food Distribution
Your first stop will be signing in.
Then, staff will explain what is happening and help direct you to your assignment. There are no complicated volunteer positions to learn. Instead, volunteers work together on different tasks based on what the distribution needs that day.
If you are unsure about something, ask! Staff and team leads are there to help.
What Might I do?
Your task may be different from the volunteer next to you. Depending on the needs of the distribution. Some tasks may include:
- Help unload food
- Organize and sort food
- Pack food into boxes and bags
- Help with participant sign-in
- Direct vehicles
- Load food into vehicles

Your assignment can change throughout the day, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself helping with several different tasks. For example, you may complete one task, then be assigned another as the event progresses. Every task helps keep the event running smoothly.
Will I Be Working Alone?
No. Food distributions are a team effort.
You will be surrounded by other volunteers, staff, and team leads who are working toward the same goal. If you volunteer with a friend, family member, or another Angel, you can also let the team know that you would like to stay together.
What If I’m Nervous?
It is normal to feel nervous when trying something new.
Remember, you are not expected to walk in knowing exactly what to do. Your assignment will come with instructions, and there will be people around you who can help.
Whether you are sorting food, packing boxes, directing vehicles, or helping with another task, your work is an important part of the distribution.
