Attending Your First Food Distribution

Attending a Soldiers’ Angels food distribution for the first time? You might be wondering what to expect, what you need to bring, or how the distribution works. We created A First-Timer’s Guide to help you feel prepared before your first food distribution.
You do not need to memorize the process. This guide is simply here to help you feel comfortable and ready to attend. Staff and volunteers will be there to guide you when you arrive.
Before You Arrive
Once you are registered for a food distribution, keep an eye on your email for important event information. As the distribution gets closer, you will receive details about the location and your assigned time slot.
Your time slot is important. Please arrive at your assigned time.
You will not be able to enter the distribution early. If you have a scheduling conflict, please contact Soldiers’ Angels before the event to discuss your options.
What Should I Bring?
Be sure to bring your military ID with you.
You should also make room in your vehicle before arriving. You will receive several boxes or bags of groceries, so clearing space in your trunk or truck bed will make it easier to load your food.
There are no specific vehicle requirements. Cars, trucks, and other vehicles can attend. If you do not have a vehicle, you can still participate. Contact Soldiers’ Angels before your food distribution to let the team know you will not have a vehicle. Because the process can vary by location, they will guide you through the process for that location.
What Happens When I Arrive?
When you arrive, there will be signs, cones, staff, and volunteers directing traffic. Please follow these to get checked in.
If you arrive during your assigned time slot, you will be directed to follow the cones and join the vehicle line. If you arrive before your assigned time, you will need to return at your scheduled time. Some locations may have a place to park and wait, but this is not always available.
To help the distribution run smoothly, please arrive at your assigned time rather than arriving early.
What Happens During the Distribution?
Once you are in line, you will remain in your vehicle as you move through the distribution.
You will drive through several stations, stopping at each one as directed. At these stations, volunteers will load groceries into your vehicle’s trunk or truck bed. Depending on the location and event, you may also receive flyers or other information from volunteers.
Once you have received your food, you are free to leave.
How Long Will It Take?
Every food distribution is a little different, so there is no set amount of time you should expect to be there.
The length of your visit depends on the location, the number of volunteers, and the number of people attending that day. Arriving during your assigned time slot and following the directions of staff and volunteers will help the process move as smoothly as possible.
What If I’m Nervous?
It is completely normal to feel a little nervous when attending your first food distribution, especially if you are not sure what to expect.
You do not have to know how everything works before you arrive. Staff and volunteers will be there to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and help you know where to go.
Most importantly, remember that this event is for you. You deserve the support, and you should never feel uncomfortable asking for help or information. Take things one step at a time, follow the directions from staff and volunteers, and know that we are glad you are here.
