Why GI Forum Bingo Nights Matter More Than You Think

At the GI Forum in San Antonio, bingo nights are more than just games and prizes; they’re a powerful reminder to our local Veterans that they are seen, supported, and valued. Veterans from both permanent and temporary housing programs come together for a warm meal, a few rounds of bingo, and most importantly, a chance to connect.

For many, it’s a break from the challenges of everyday life. And for the volunteers and staff who make it all happen, it’s a chance to serve those who once served us.

Veterans Bingo Night

Bingo nights at the GI Forum, whether over lunch or dinner, offer more than entertainment; they create moments of connection, healing, and hope. Veterans gather to enjoy a warm meal, win prizes like clothing or personal care items, and enjoy social interaction in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

One Veteran shared, “It’s fun. I like bingo.” Another added, “It’s a break. I love to talk to my friends. It gets us out. It’s a time and place just to have fun.”

A third Veteran described how isolating the dorms can be: “We see our case manager, but that’s all business. This is a positive social space for us.”

Staff with Heart

For those who work at the GI Forum, the connection runs deep.

  • David was once homeless himself. “They helped me out in 2015 when I had nowhere to go. Now, this is where I want to be—giving back to the people I once was.”
  • Zachary, head cook, shared: “I’ve been here 8 years. I come in even when I’m off. The smiles on their faces warm my heart. I meet all kinds of people and learn something new every day.”
  • Rosemary explained: “The Veterans look forward to it. They get excited when we post about bingo. This brightens their day, it’s fun, and a nice, much-needed break.”

Why Volunteering Here Matters

Volunteering at the GI Forum helps bring comfort and joy to Veterans who may be struggling with isolation, recovery, or transition. One Veteran put it best:

“Other places meet our needs, but here, we get connection.”

You don’t need any special skills to volunteer. You just need time, compassion, and willingness to help. Volunteers of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome.

Join Us There

Even one evening of volunteering can make a lasting impact. Whether you’re serving meals, passing out prizes, or simply sharing a kind word, you’re helping create a space where Veterans feel supported and seen. Because at bingo night, you’re not just helping with an event—you’re helping build a community.
