Soldiers’ Angels Volunteer Activities: Rated

Did you know August 22nd is National Be An Angel Day? This holiday encourages kindness and good deeds (like volunteering). While we didn’t start the holiday, we love celebrating it because it aligns perfectly with our mission at Soldiers’ Angels!

Side note: We DID start National Day of the Deployed, which is on October 26.

This year to celebrate, we asked our staff members, interns, and a few key volunteers to participate in Soldiers’ Angels volunteer opportunities and share their experiences to show how easy it is to get involved. We hope this inspires you to find a volunteer activity meaningful to you and give back to Service Members, Veterans, or Military families.

Supporting Operation Warm Winter

Tracy C. kicked things off with one of the simplest ways to volunteer: shopping for needed items for Operation: Warm Winter to support homeless Veterans. She gives this activity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!

𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: Virtual

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲: Less than 3 minutes

“This was the easiest volunteering I’ve ever done. Loved that the Soldiers’ Angels website link on the Warm Winter page gave me options on how to donate. The ease of clicking through to a complete list of needed items on Amazon was so easy and I never had to leave the house.”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“It is nice to know that there will be a few less Veterans cold this winter.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“Absolutely. I know these requested items are not only needed but will end up in the right hands.”

Bake for the Deployed

Marissa C. tried her hand at shipping a care package of homemade baked goods to a deployed Service Member and rated it 5 stars! Want to try this opportunity? 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: Virtual

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲: 6 hours

“The baking volunteer opportunity can be as easy or as hard as you want! I did a mixture of making items from scratch and making items from easy mixes. I baked a total of 6 different items, but there is no rule on that, so a bunch of one baked item is just as good as 2, or 3, or 6 items! I did re-use some commercial packaging to try and secure the items so that they shipped safely.”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“The whole time I was baking, I had on music and I thought about the Service Member that I was supporting. I wondered about her location, how she’s feeling, if she’s homesick, if she has made friends there to share with, what type of things she likes, what type of things she doesn’t like, and if the items would travel well and show up still intact.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“I sure hope that I did, at least for my Service Member and those close to her!”

Write a letter to a Deployed Service Member

Ayauna B. tackled writing a letter to a Deployed Service Member and rated it 5 stars!

“Aside from trying to find the words to express my gratitude, it was easy, humbling and fulfilling.”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲: 15 min.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“I was emotional. I remember the days I’ve smiled when my name was called for Mail Call, and the heartbreak I felt for my friends who didn’t. It was humbling and gratifying.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

Pack a Box Lunch

Watch as Jana E. packs a non-perishable box lunch for homeless Veterans. She gives this activity 5 stars!

“Very easy! It’s fun being able to pack things in an assembly line. Knowing each box will help feed a homeless Veteran.”

𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: In-Person

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲: Varies! 1 box took 1 minute!

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“It is a great feeling to know a small part of your day can make a BIG impact on a homeless Veterans’ day.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“Yes, being able to ensure a Veteran has food to eat or a snack while at their VA appointment truly makes an impact on that Veterans’ day.”

Write Cards

Vicki S. wrote 5 cards and gave this activity 4 stars. You can get in on this activity by becoming a Soldiers’ Angels volunteer and then selecting the card writing opportunity.

“It was super easy. The longest part was going out to get the cards. I will have some on hand so I can continue to do this opportunity.”

𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: Virtual

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲: 2.5 minutes

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“Sending someone an encouraging card felt absolutely amazing. I believe it’s a wonderful way to lift someone’s spirits. Just thinking about them opening the card, seeing that a stranger cares, and feeling that boost of support fills me with joy. Knowing I’ve made a difference in their day brings me incredible fulfillment and joy.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“Yes. I know how I would feel to receive cards from others I don’t know.”

Make a Holiday Ornament

Nancy M. and her mom, Anna tackled DIY ornaments. We use these to go in our Holiday Stockings for the Holiday Stockings for Heroes campaign. They rated this 5 stars.

“It was very easy. My daughter showed me how to make the candy cane ornaments and it was a great way to spend part of our Sunday as a mother/daughter team.”

𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: Virtual

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲: 1 Hour

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“I very much enjoyed making these candy cane ornaments. I am the wife of a veteran who served in the Air Force for 48 years and I love working with Soldiers’ Angels as a way to honor his service to our country.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“Yes. My husband was deployed to Vietnam and I would send him letters and packages on a regular basis, because I knew that he enjoyed receiving things from home. So I understand the importance and morale lift that receiving cards, packages and even simple Christmas ornaments can give someone a long way from home. Anything that I can do to let them know that they are loved and supported is important to me.”

Make a No Sew Blanket

Amy P. gave No Sew Blankets a try and rated it 5 stars! Service Members and Veterans love receiving blankets and these are very easy to make. Get the instructions here.

“No-sew blankets are so easy to make and anyone can learn with just the video. You also can’t really mess them up, which is nice for people like me who are not crafty. The end product would make you think I was really crafty!”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“I enjoyed doing it. As I was tying knots I was thinking about all the Veterans out there who might love a blanket that was made just for them. A hospital room is so boring with white sheets and bedding. Having something special that is unique and personal seems like it would be greatly appreciated. Every knot I tied meant I was one step closer to getting it to someone so they know they are loved.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“I know my blanket will get to a deserving Veteran. I can envision the moment the blanket is handed to the Veteran and the smile on his or her face. Although it is just one blanket, I feel like it will impact someone greatly.”

Pack and Send a Baby Shower Care Package

Through Soldiers’ Angels you can help Military and Veteran families celebrate their new bundle of joy by sending a baby shower care package! Angela J. gave this activity 5 stars.

“It was easy and difficult at the same time. The easy part was that I loved looking through all the new baby gadgets and thinking of my grandchildren when they were babies. The difficult part was that I couldn’t make up my mind for what I wanted!! Everything was adorable!”

Write 5 Cards to Service Members and Veterans

Former Marine Bethany got a little emotional during her activity—write cards to Service Members and Veterans. She was able to personally relate to a deployed Marine she was writing to!

“This was super easy and fun! It was a joy shopping for super vibrant greeting cards to send. Each card only cost a dollar (plus postage)- a small price to pay to give thanks to active-duty servicemembers and veterans for their service to our country. I included a short uplifting hand-written message in each card and dropped them at the post office. In the future, I plan to handmake the greeting cards I send because I love crafting!”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹?

“I was surprised at how emotional this was for me. When writing to a Marine, I actually cried. I served in the Marine Corps and know what it is like to be overseas away from family. I felt grateful to Soldiers’ Angels for affording me the opportunity to send love and encouragement to a fellow Marine who I will most likely never meet.”

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆?

“No doubt! I sent five cards to five strangers. I believe they will brighten the day for each one of them!”

Volunteer in the Garden

Leah took some time to connect with nature during her volunteering at the Polytrauma Transitional Rehab Program (PTRP) garden in San Antonio. This beautiful space was created by and continues to be maintained by Soldiers’ Angels volunteers.

“Working in the garden was an easy and rewarding way to give back. Anyone can contribute their time, talents, and resources to help enhance the garden and support the Veterans it serves.”

Volunteer at the Warehouse in San Antonio

Michelle had family visiting and got everyone involved in volunteering at the Soldiers’ Angels warehouse! The task of the day was packing box lunches for homeless Veterans. In just about an hour, with the help of four family members, Michelle’s team packed an impressive 192 box lunches!

“I had a fantastic time working in the warehouse! It’s an amazing way to get involved and make a big impact in just a short amount of time. I also love bringing my family along whenever they’re in town—the assembly lines are a perfect way to team up and make a difference together.”

Adopt a Deployed Service Member

Susie adopted a deployed Service Member and is preparing to support them throughout their deployment with one care package and two letters every month!

Make Paracord Bracelets

Nancy (and her helper… Nico the office cat!) knocked out three paracord bracelets during a quick break and she knows the items will make a big impact! Learn how to make them here.

“This volunteer activity is very easy and I do feel like I have made an impact. I am the daughter of an Air Force Veteran (48 years) and the wife of an Air Force Veteran (6 years). Helping our current military is important to me as I love and respect our armed forces and I volunteer with Soldiers’ Angels as a way of honoring my father’s and husband’s commitment to our country.”

“It makes me feel like I am making a difference to a deployed military person. These men and women make great sacrifices, being away from friends and family, to keep our world safe, and if I can help them in any way I can, then I want to let them know that they are not forgotten.”

Support a Caregiver with a Care Package

Chelsea (who also happens to be a caregiver herself!) created a fun video of her experience supporting a female caregiver with a care package! Check out how easy it was to create something unique and meaningful for this caregiver!

“I connected with the person I was sending the gift to. She sounded like her and I were living in each other’s life and that made me want to go above and beyond to ensure that she felt seen and appreciated by the gift I was giving her.”

“I do feel I made an impact. I think that she will feel seen and heard and appreciated. I also wanted her to get a dose of good vibes with the gift so that whatever she is going through can make her feel just a little bit of a spark in her to keep her going and to not quit.”

Pack Candy Bags for Service Members & Veterans

Adrian spent time in the warehouse packing candy bags for Service Members and Veterans!

“This activity was great. It was fun to talk to the other staff and get to know them, as well as some of the other volunteers and hear why they are there volunteering. It was fun and enjoyable.”

𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: Virtual or In-Person (in San Antonio)

“I know I made impact when I found out that these candy bags would be going to VA hospitals, deployed, active duty military, and reserves all around the world. But I do think it’s probably a bit more disconnected to the people you are helping than some of the other volunteer activities Soldiers’ Angels has to offer.”

Pack Hygiene Kits for Hospitalized Veterans

Jana worked in our warehouse to pack hygiene kits for hospitalized Veterans! This is a great volunteer activity that can be done at our warehouse in San Antonio or built into a corporate event! Learn more about our corporate engagement activities here.

“It was an easy volunteer opportunity. They had the items split up in the containers and all I had to do was grab the hygiene kit bag and place one item from each container into the bag until I filled up the hygiene kit.”

“It made me feel great to know that by packing these items into the bags I would be ensuring that an at-risk Veteran would have a more enjoyable stay at the hospital not having to be without hygiene items. This small task will help alleviate some stress from the Veterans during their time at the hospital.”

Volunteer at a Military and Veteran Food Distribution

Braving the 100+ degree temperatures, Ayauna headed out to volunteer at our Military and Food Distribution in San Antonio. We’re certain she discovered that the high energy and morale at our food distribution events keeps everyone going, rain, shine, or extreme heat! Learn more about volunteering for these events here.

“It would appear difficult during setup and take down, and there’s a lot of physical activity, but there is so much to do, and the morale was through the roof, so I barely noticed.”
