Beat Boredom and Give Back This Summer

As schools wind down and summer approaches, many parents are hearing the familiar question: “What are we doing this summer?”. If you’re looking to keep the kids busy, beat boredom, and maybe reduce screen time, we’ve got a great solution, get involved in summer volunteering!

Volunteering with kids isn’t just a way to fill the time—it’s a powerful opportunity to teach them the value of giving back. With Soldiers’ Angels, families can participate in a variety of hands-on, kid-friendly volunteer activities that support our deployed troops, Veterans, and military families.

While children can’t register to volunteer on their own, parents and guardians can sign up and include their kids in meaningful, creative service projects.

Activities for All Ages

Make Cards & Draw Pictures

Bring joy to a deployed Service Member with a burst of creativity and color! Kids can make handmade cards and drawings that show appreciation and spread smiles. Encourage them to write messages like “Thank you for your service!” or “We’re thinking of you!” A simple note, joke, or crayon drawing can become a cherished keepsake.

Decorate Care Packages

What’s more fun than opening a box full of thoughtful goodies? Opening one that’s been lovingly decorated. Kids can personalize care packages by adding colorful drawings, stickers, handwritten messages, and creative designs. From stars and stripes to smiley faces and doodles, every bit of decoration helps make the package feel warmer and more personal. This is a great way to let kids personalize their contributions and feel connected.

Write Letters

A simple letter filled with kind words and updates from daily life can make a world of difference to someone far away. Kids can write their own notes or include a colorful picture to accompany a family letter, making the gesture even more meaningful. Whether it’s a “thank you,” a story about their pet, or a drawing of their favorite superhero, these personal touches often become treasured keepsakes.

Make No-Sew Blankets (Parent Guided)

These cozy, easy-to-make fleece blankets are always in demand and a part of our campaign Operation: Warm Winter. Not only do they provide warmth and comfort, but they also show a personal touch that recipients truly appreciate. This is a safe, hands-on activity perfect for younger kids, guided by an adult. Each blanket can include a hand-drawn note to brighten someone’s day and show they’re remembered and appreciated. Watch this YouTube video on how to make a no-sew blanket for step-by-step instructions.

Activities for Older Kids

Make Paracord Bracelets

These bracelets are more than just cool; they can be used in emergency situations for a variety of practical purposes. Kids can enjoy creating them and learn their different uses. They make an excellent addition to care packages for deployed Service Members, offering both a useful tool and a heartfelt gesture. Learn how to make paracord bracelets here.

Bake for Our Troops

Few things say “we care” like homemade treats! Baking cookies, brownies, rice crispy treats, or goodies is a fun and delicious way to give back to our deployed troops. Kids can help with measuring, mixing, and packaging, learning not only baking skills but the joy of giving. A homemade treat can be a sweet taste of home that brings comfort and warmth.

Create a Care Package on a Budget

Want to sneak in a life lesson this summer? Turn care package planning into a fun financial literacy activity. Give your child a set budget and challenge them to create the most thoughtful package. They’ll learn how to prioritize spending, shop with purpose, and feel proud of their contribution.

Make This Summer Count

Whether your child loves coloring or is ready for a summer project, there’s an activity for every age and ability. As summer approaches, don’t let boredom take over. Get involved, give back, and make memories that matter.

Note: Activities are grouped by age as a general guide. Feel free to adapt them to fit your child’s interests and abilities. The most important thing is to have fun and give back together!
