Honoring Veterans Day: 3 Simple Ways to Show Appreciation

Each year on November 11, Americans pause to honor brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a day to say thank you to those who’ve dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom.

While many communities hold parades, ceremonies, and other events, there are plenty of simple, meaningful ways to show your appreciation.

Here are a few ideas to help you celebrate Veterans Day this year.

1. Take a Moment to Learn the Meaning Behind the Day

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. What started as a commemoration of peace has grown into a national day of gratitude for all who have served, past and present, in every branch of the military.

It’s a time to pause and reflect on the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who defended our freedom. Veterans Day reminds us that service takes many forms through a lifelong commitment to country. Taking a moment to honor that service helps ensure their legacy and impact are never forgotten.

2. Say “Thank you”

It might sound simple, but those two words carry a lot of weight. Whether it’s a family member, friend, coworker, or even a stranger, a heartfelt “thank you for your service” means more than you might realize.

If you don’t know a Veteran personally or you’re not sure how to express your gratitude in person, you can still reach out in a meaningful way. Soldiers’ Angels Virtual Volunteer Opportunities allow you to write letters of appreciation to Veterans and Service Members from anywhere.

3. Volunteer or Support a Veterans Day Event

Many organizations and communities host events to recognize Veterans, including Soldiers’ Angels’ Home of the Brave campaign

Each year, Soldiers’ Angels partners with the VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) and corporate sponsors to organize celebrations at VA Medical Centers across the country. From patient visits and thank-you gifts to luncheons and parades, these events ensure Veterans feel seen, celebrated, and valued.

You can make an impact by volunteering, donating, or helping spread the word about these efforts.

However you choose to honor Veterans Day—whether through service, learning, or a simple “thank you”—know that your actions make a difference. Every gesture, big or small, reminds our nation’s heroes that their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated. Let’s make every day an opportunity to support and uplift those who’ve served.
