8 Common Myths About Volunteering with Soldiers’ Angels (And the Truth Behind Them)

Have you ever thought about volunteering with Soldiers’ Angels but wondered if you had enough time, lived close enough, or had the right experience?

If so, you’re not alone. Many people want to support Service Members, Veterans, and military families. Yet, common misconceptions often stop them before they ever get started.

The truth is that volunteering looks different for everyone. Soldiers’ Angels has volunteer opportunities that are flexible, rewarding, and open to people from all backgrounds. Whether you prefer volunteering from home, helping at community events, or participating in seasonal campaigns, there is an opportunity that fits your schedule and interests. Whether you have an hour each month or several hours each week, there is a meaningful way to make a difference.

Let’s take a closer look at eight common myths about volunteering with Soldiers’ Angels and the facts that prove anyone can make a meaningful impact.

Myth #1: I Need to Be Military Connected to Volunteer

Fact: Anyone with the desire to help others can volunteer.

One of the most common misconceptions is that only Veterans or military families can volunteer with Soldiers’ Angels. While many volunteers have military connections, military connections are not a requirement.

Soldiers’ Angels welcomes people from all walks of life. Volunteers include students, retirees, working professionals, military spouses, families, and individuals simply looking for a meaningful way to give back.

What matters most is compassion, kindness, and a willingness to support those who have served our country.

Myth #2: I Need Lots of Free Time

Fact: Every contribution matters, no matter how much time you have.

Busy schedules often prevent people from volunteering because they assume it requires a large weekly commitment. Fortunately, that isn’t the case. Soldiers’ Angels offers flexible volunteer opportunities that fit a variety of schedules.

Even spending an hour writing a letter, helping at an event, or supporting a donation drive can make a meaningful difference.

Every act of kindness counts.

Myth #3: I Have to Live Near a VA Hospital or Military Base

Fact: You can volunteer from almost anywhere.

Not everyone lives near a military installation or a VA facility. Thankfully, distance does not have to stand in the way of making a difference.

Soldiers’ Angels offers several virtual volunteer opportunities that allow supporters across the country to participate from home. Volunteers can write letters, send cards, create handmade items, participate in special campaigns, and much more.

Because there are so many options, volunteers can choose the experience that best fits their interests, schedule, and comfort level.

Whether you’re across town or across the country, there is a place for you.

Myth #4: My Contribution Is Too Small to Matter

Fact: Small acts of kindness create a lasting impact.

It’s easy to think that one letter, one volunteer shift, or one donated item won’t make much of a difference. However, meaningful support is built one act of kindness at a time.

A handwritten card can brighten someone’s day.  A warm blanket or pair of socks can provide comfort and warmth during the winter months. A smile at a food distribution can remind someone that their community cares.

Individually, those actions may seem small. But together, they create an incredible impact.

Myth #5: I Need Special Skills or Training

Fact: You already have what it takes to get started.

Most volunteer opportunities don’t require special skills or experience. Instead, Soldiers’ Angels provides guidance and resources to help volunteers participate successfully.

Whether you enjoy writing, organizing, crafting, greeting Veterans, or working behind the scenes, your talents can make a meaningful difference.

Everyone has something valuable to offer.

Myth #6: Soldiers’ Angels Only Offers Virtual Volunteer Opportunities

Fact: There are many ways to serve

While many people know Soldiers’ Angels for its virtual volunteer opportunities, there are also many in-person opportunities.

Volunteers can assist at Monthly Military and Veteran Food Distributions, support Veterans at select VA medical centers, help with community events, and participate in packing projects throughout the year. These opportunities allow volunteers to connect directly with Veterans, Service Members, military families, and fellow volunteers while making a meaningful impact in their communities.

Of course, virtual opportunities remain available for those who prefer to volunteer from home.

Myth #7: I Have to Volunteer Every Week

Fact: You choose your level of involvement.

Life gets busy. Between work, school, family responsibilities, and other commitments, it may not always be possible to volunteer regularly.

Fortunately, Soldiers’ Angels understands that flexibility matters.

Some volunteers only participate during holidays or special campaigns. Others volunteer monthly or whenever they have extra time. There isn’t a minimum to make a difference.

The important part isn’t how often you volunteer. It’s choosing to help when you can.

Myth #8: Someone Else Will Help

Fact: Every volunteer helps strengthen our mission.

It can be easy to assume someone else will step forward. However, every program depends on individuals who decide to take action.

Every volunteer helps create a stronger network of support for Service Members, Veterans, and military families. Together, we remind those who have served that they are not forgotten.

Each person brings unique talents, experiences, and compassion. When combined, those individual efforts create something truly extraordinary.

The Truth About Volunteering

The biggest obstacle to volunteering is often the belief in one of these common myths.

The truth is simple: anyone can make a difference.

No matter your background, schedule, location, or experience, there is a place for you at Soldiers’ Angels. Whether you have an hour to spare once a month or time to volunteer more regularly, every act of kindness helps support Service Members, Veterans, and military families.

Together, we can ensure that no Service Member, Veteran, or military family goes unloved.
