National Military Appreciation Month: 6 Ways to Honor Those Who Serve

In 1999, a bipartisan Congressional effort led by Senator John McCain was implemented to create National Military Appreciation Month. A month with the goal of honoring and recognizing those serving, our Veterans, and the legacy that our Military has left behind throughout our country’s history. Since it’s inception, it has been adopted across commercial, government, and nonprofit establishments alike, and continues to grow to this day.

At Soldiers’ Angels, our mission is to provide aid, comfort, and resources to the Military and Veteran community. To honor and remember those who have served, or are currently serving, is part of what we do on a day-to-day basis. This is why every year, when National Military Appreciation Month comes, we are beyond excited to see proud Americans and other organizations engaged in our mission.

Even with it’s growth, many people are still unsure how to celebrate National Military Appreciation Month. In this blog, we will cover five ways that you, your family, or your work can turn gratitude into action.

1. Support Veteran-Owned Businesses

Put your dollars to work by shopping at Veteran-owned businesses. From coffee shops like Black Riffle Coffee Company or clothing brands like Grunt Style, your support helps Veterans thrive in civilian life. These proud Veteran-owned businesses will likely be celebrating or acknowledging National Military Appreciation Month, so let them know you appreciate them and engage their social media platforms throughout the month.

A simple internet search on Google or on Chat GPT like “Veteran-owned business near me,” can help you find organizations operated by Veterans.

2. Share Stories on Social Media

Use your platform to highlight the stories of Service Members, Veterans, and their families. Personal stories create emotional connections and inspire others to engage. If you or anyone you know personally would be willing to share a photo or a short video of them in uniform, it would be perfect.

There will also be Veteran companies or organizations sharing posts and stories on their page throughout the month. A simple re-share can be just as impactful.

3. Observe Memorial Day with Purpose

While Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer, it’s important to remember its true meaning: honoring those who gave their lives in service. It’s more than just a day off. It’s a day meant for reflection, appreciation, and remembering those who gave their lives for our freedoms. Consider doing the following when Memorial Day approaches this year:

  • Share the stories of fallen heroes
  • Visit a cemetery or memorial
  • Participate in a moment of silence

4. Write Letters of Gratitude

A simple handwritten letter can mean everything to a deployed Service Member or Veteran. Schools, churches, and community groups can organize letter-writing campaigns to multiply the impact. Many Service Members don’t have the support of friends or family and can feel quite lonely, especially during difficult deployments.

A handwritten letter that thanks them can sometimes be what gets a Service Member or Veteran through a stressful day.

5. Volunteer Your Time

Many nonprofits that support our Military rely on volunteers. Whether it’s packing care packages, organizing events, or offering professional skills, your time can make a lasting impact.

Many of which we offer here at Soldiers’ Angels. No matter your age or skills, you can help with supporting our Veterans and Service Members.

6. Send Care Packages to Deployed Troops

One of the most direct ways to show support is by sending care packages filled with essentials and personal touches. Items like snacks, hygiene products, handwritten notes, and small comforts from home can boost morale in a big way.

Many non-profits (such as ourselves) that support deployed Military will have care package boxes ready for volunteers to pack snacks, toiletries, and downtime items that Service Members enjoy and will ensure they get shipped out to those who need it.

Dates to remember In National Military Appreciation Month

National Military Appreciation Month includes several important commemorations, such as:

  • Loyalty Day (May 1)
  • Military Spouse Appreciation Day (Friday before Mother’s Day)
  • Armed Forces Day (third Saturday in May)
  • Memorial Day (last Monday in May)

Each of these dates highlights a different aspect of military life—from honoring fallen heroes to recognizing the strength of military families.

Final Thoughts: Turning Appreciation Into Action

Celebrating National Military Appreciation Month isn’t just about recognition—it’s about taking meaningful steps to support those who serve and sacrifice year-round.

Whether you send a care package, volunteer your time, or simply share a message of gratitude, every action contributes to a stronger, more supportive community for our military and Veteran families. Happy Military Appreciation Month to brave Service Members and their families who make our freedoms possible.
