Why Your Support Matters During the Holidays
November 5, 2026
Imagine spending Christmas thousands of miles from home.
The holidays are often a time for family traditions, shared meals, and making memories with the people we love. But for many military families, the season can also bring an empty seat at the table, a parent missing from holiday photos, or a Service Member spending Christmas far from home.
While many of us look forward to celebrating with family and friends, others are finding ways to make the season feel special despite the distance. A parent at home may be trying to keep familiar traditions alive for their children. A young Service Member may be experiencing their first holiday away from family. A deployed parent may be doing their best to stay connected to the people they miss most.
This is why holiday support for Service Members and their families matters. Through programs like Holiday Stockings for Heroes and Adopt-A-Family, Soldiers’ Angels helps bring comfort, connection, and a little extra joy to those who need it during the holiday season.
A Reminder That Someone Is Thinking of You
For many of us, a Christmas stocking is a familiar part of the holiday season. It might hold favorite treats, small surprises, or simple things we look forward to finding each year.
For a deployed Service Member, however, receiving a stocking from someone they have never met can mean so much more. It reminds them that even thousands of miles from home, someone is thinking of them.

Think about a young Service Member experiencing their first Christmas away from their parents, siblings, or friends. They may be adjusting to military life, learning to navigate new responsibilities, and discovering what the holidays feel like when familiar traditions are out of reach. During a season centered on togetherness, even a small gesture can help them feel a little less far from home.
For Veterans spending the holidays in a VA hospital, a stocking can offer a different kind of comfort. Being away from home while receiving care can make an already challenging time feel even more isolating. A thoughtful gift can bring a little holiday cheer and remind them that their service and sacrifices haven’t been forgotten.
“Dear Soldiers’ Angels, I wanted to write your organization and thank you for all your support. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated from all the troops deployed. The little things from home that we never think about while stateside mean so much while we are away from our families during the holiday season. Words cannot capture how thankful we are for people and organizations that think of us while we are away. A support group that truly gets it goes farther than can be explained. Sincerely,” – Brent, MSG, USA
A stocking will not erase the distance. It cannot replace a hug from home or make the holidays feel exactly the same. But it can offer a moment of happiness when someone needs it most. It can brighten an otherwise difficult day and remind a Service Member or Veteran that their sacrifices haven’t gone unnoticed.
Behind every stocking is someone who chose to make the holidays a little brighter for a person they may never meet. Volunteers gather supplies, prepare stockings, and give their time to share a little holiday spirit with those who cannot be home.
And while they may never see the moment a stocking is opened, they can still make that moment special.

At Home, the Holidays Can Be Difficult
Children may feel excited about the holidays and sad at the same time that a parent is missing. They may struggle to understand why their family cannot all be together. They may wonder whether their deployed parent will see their presents, hear about their favorite moments, or be there for the traditions they look forward to every year.
The parent at home carries those feelings while managing their own.
They may miss their partner just as much as their children do. They may be balancing work, household responsibilities, and holiday preparations while trying to make the season special for everyone. And if money is tight, providing gifts and creating joyful memories can become another source of stress.
For some families, the hardest part is not knowing how to make everything come together.
This is where a caring community can make a difference.
Helping Families Make the Holidays Special
While some families are separated by deployment, others are navigating the holidays while facing financial challenges. For parents, the desire to make Christmas special for their children does not disappear when money is tight.
Parents may worry about providing gifts, preparing a holiday meal, or creating the traditions their children look forward to each year.

These pressures can feel even heavier when one parent is away and the other is managing the household alone.
Through the Adopt-A-Family Soldiers’ Angels program, individuals and groups can support military and Veteran families during the holiday season. That support helps families with holiday needs and gives parents more room to focus on what matters most: spending meaningful time with their children and creating memories together.
And for a family already missing someone they love, those moments can become especially meaningful.

“I just wanted to say my Angel was more than anything I could have hoped for this holiday. Thank you so much for what this program does for the military. I really needed the help more than ever this year and the Angel came through like a true angel and made sure that our holiday was completely worry free.”
The people who adopt a family may never see the moment their gifts are opened. They may never hear the laughter in the living room or see the relief on a parent’s face.
But their generosity helps make those moments possible.
They are giving more than gifts. They are helping parents create memories, giving children something to look forward to, and reminding families that they have not been forgotten.
Make This Holiday Season Mean More
Holiday Stockings for Heroes and Adopt-A-Family look different, but both share the same purpose: helping Service Members and military families feel remembered, supported, and cared for during the holidays.
We can remind a Service Member that someone is thinking of them. We can help a parent create a special holiday for their children. And we can show families that even when their loved ones are far away, a community is standing beside them.
Whether you volunteer, donate, organize a collection, or encourage others to get involved, your support helps Soldiers’ Angels bring aid, comfort, and resources to those who serve and the families who stand beside them.

This holiday season, consider being part of the reason someone smiles, a child has a gift to open, or a Service Member feels remembered while serving far from home.
