The History of Armed Forces Day
May 14, 2026
Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to recognize the men and women currently serving in every branch of the United States Military. While Memorial Day honors those who died in service and Veterans Day honors those who previously served, Armed Forces Day shines a spotlight on those actively wearing the uniform today. Since its creation more than 75 years ago, the day has served as a reminder of the commitment, sacrifice, and readiness required to protect and defend the nation every day.
The history of Armed Forces Day begins in the years following World War II. During the war, the United States Military had grown rapidly, with each branch operating somewhat independently. In 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act, legislation that reorganized the nation’s military structure and eventually led to the creation of the Department of Defense. The act unified the Army, Navy, and newly established Air Force under one national defense organization in an effort to improve coordination and preparedness.
Before Armed Forces Day existed, each Military branch celebrated its own separate holiday. There was Army Day, Navy Day, and Air Force Day, each observed independently across the country. In 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of a single day that would honor all branches together. The first Armed Forces Day was officially celebrated on May 20, 1950.

President Truman described the first Armed Forces Day as a demonstration of the nation’s unified defense strength and readiness. Across the country, communities marked the occasion with Military parades, air shows, open houses, demonstrations, and ceremonies designed to help civilians better understand the role of the Armed Forces. The first theme for the observance was “Teamed for Defense,” emphasizing the importance of cooperation among the Military branches.
Today, Armed Forces Day is observed on the third Saturday in May as part of Armed Forces Week. It honors active-duty Service Members across the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserve components, and now the Space Force. Communities continue to celebrate with ceremonies, local events, and acts of appreciation for those currently serving.
For many Americans, Armed Forces Day is also a chance to reflect on the everyday sacrifices Military families make. Behind every Service Member is often a network of spouses, children, parents, friends, and supporters who carry the weight of deployments, training schedules, relocations, and long periods apart. The day serves as a reminder that service impacts entire families and communities, not just the individual wearing the uniform.
Show your support through Go Camo
One meaningful way to show support during Armed Forces Day and throughout the year is by participating in our Go Camo care package collection drive. This campaign helps Soldiers’ Angels collect the top-requested care package items throughout the year as well as financial donations to help offset the cost of shipping the care packages. Participation is easy! You can host a collection drive and collect items within your community, purchase items and send directly to Soldiers’ Angels, shop our Amazon Wishlist, or make a donation towards shipping.
Armed Forces Day may have started as a way to celebrate a newly unified Military, but its purpose remains just as important today. It is a moment to recognize the courage, commitment, and service of those currently defending the nation and to ensure they know their sacrifices are seen and appreciated.
