Tips for Keeping a Recurring Volunteer Habit (Even When Life Gets Busy)

Life can get busy. Work schedules shift, family responsibilities grow, and unexpected obligations arise. During these moments, it can be easy to assume volunteering has to take a back seat.

The truth is that volunteering does not have to be a huge commitment to make an impact. When volunteering becomes a habit, every small action can create lasting support for Service Members and Veterans.

Building a recurring volunteer habit helps ensure that encouragement continues reaching deployed Service Members wherever they serve. Below are a few tips for keeping a recurring volunteer habit.

Start Small and Stay Consistent

One of the best ways to build a lasting, recurring volunteer habit is to start small. Instead of committing to something that can quickly feel overwhelming, begin with a small, repeatable action. For example:

• Write a letter to a deployed Service Member twice a month

• Participating in one recurring in-person opportunity a month

• Send a one-time care package once a month

Try setting aside a specific time each week or month for these opportunities. Some volunteers write letters while enjoying their morning coffee or during a quiet evening at home. By pairing volunteering with moments that already exist in your routine, it can become something you look forward to rather than something you feel obligated to complete.

Over time, volunteering becomes less about “finding time” and more about continuing a habit that feels meaningful.

Choose Opportunities That Fit Your Life

One of the benefits of volunteering with Soldiers’ Angels is the variety of ways to get involved. As a result, volunteers can choose opportunities that fit their schedules, interests, and comfort levels, with both hands-on and virtual options available. This makes it easier to stay involved during busy seasons of life.

Special campaigns throughout the year can also be a great way to get involved. These campaigns have set dates and specific goals, making them a helpful option for volunteers who enjoy participating in focused efforts or supporting causes that resonate with them personally.

Finding the right type of volunteer opportunity for you makes it much easier to stay involved long term.

Connect with the Volunteer Community

Staying connected with other volunteers can help you stay motivated. For instance, many Angels stay connected through our social media sharing experiences, encouragement, and ideas. These spaces allow volunteers to celebrate successes, ask questions, and see the impact of their service.

If you are looking for inspiration or connection, consider joining the Soldiers’ Angels Angel Forum. A private Facebook group dedicated to volunteers. Note to join this forum, you must submit a request and be an approved Angel.

Being part of a community also helps remind everyone involved that their service is part of a larger mission supporting deployed Service Members and military families.

Focus on the Impact

Life will always have its busy moments. What matters is continuing to show up when you can.

• A single letter can brighten a difficult day.

• A single package of baked goods can bring comfort and a small taste of home.

• A single care package can remind someone serving far from home that people care and appreciate them.

When volunteers continue showing up, month after month, the impact multiplies. Over time, this consistency creates a steady source of encouragement and connection for Service Members and Veterans.

Start Your Volunteer Habit

It is easy to underestimate how meaningful consistent support can be.

At Soldiers’ Angels, volunteers help ensure deployed Service Members and military families feel supported every day. By building a recurring volunteer habit, Angels help carry that mission forward, one small act of kindness at a time.

If you are interested in getting involved, consider exploring the volunteer opportunities available to find a way to serve that fits your schedule and interests.
