Veteran and Single Mother Received Car Donation

Thanks to the Recycled Rides program, a very deserving veteran in San Jose recently received the life-changing gift of a donated car. Jaime Duran is a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves and a single mother. Several years ago, she gave up her job, car, and home to move with her son and new husband to the United Arab Emirates for his contract job. After a short time, the relationship turned abusive both physically and mentally. Jaime and her son returned to San Jose where they live with friends. Jaime is attending college classes and working temporary jobs to supplement her income and continue on the path to financial recovery. The car, a newly refurbished 2013 Honda Civic, was donated by Allstate and repaired by technicians at Caliber Collision in Willow Glen who volunteered their services to repair the vehicle as a community service. Earlier this month, Jaime received the keys to her Recycled Ride at an event in San Jose- view all of the photos here.

Gratitude for Angels

We had a wonderful post to the Soldiers' Angels Facebook Page that we wanted to be sure to share with all of the amazing volunteers, donors, and supporters of our organization:

"Last night a young man sat down and started chatting with me. The conversation soon turned into talking about the years he spent in the Army. I then briefly mentioned working with Soldiers' Angels. This young mans face lit up with a huge smile as he expressed his great appreciation for Soldiers' Angels. He said the Angels don't realize how meaningful the care packages are to the troops. He explained how he had to go several weeks without a shower and receiving something as small as a little pack of baby wipes was like a piece of heaven. He said he received several care packages throughout his years of service and to this day still has all of the handmade cards received from children. I felt I should share this story so that everyone involved with Soldiers' Angels will see the hard work, dedication, unselfish acts of kindness, and love you put into Soldiers' Angels is greatly appreciated by the troops!"

More Socks Than You Can Shake a Stick At!

As you probably know, Soldiers' Angels held their first ever "Warm Feet For Warriors" campaign that ran from February 15 - April 30, 2017. Because this was the first year of our campaign, we set our initial goal fairly low-- hoping for just 1,000 pairs of socks. Imagine our surprise when we reached 1,271 pairs after just one month of the campaign! So we upped our goal to 2,500 pairs... and after one more month, we surpassed that goal! The campaign officially ended on April 30th, but the socks continued to roll in throughout May. We are very excited to announce that, although there are still some socks trickling in, as of last week we had collected 11,373 pairs of socks!! Thank you all for your generous support of this initial campaign!! These socks are already keeping the toes of our veterans and service members toasty and you can bet that next year we hope to make the campaign goal even higher!

Unexpected Honor

Angel Jen, a member of the Soldiers' Angels Deployed Adoptions Team, supported her adopted service member during the entire length of his 9-month deployment. Although she only heard back from her busy service member three times during the course of those nine months, she diligently supported him with letters and care packages. Once his deployment drew to an end, imagine Angel Jen's surprise when she received a flag in a handmade display case from her service member. Tucked inside the case was a beautiful "Thank You" letter that read:

"I would like to give you this American flag as a token of my appreciation for your continued support not only to myself, but also all my brothers and sisters in arms that you have supported through Soldiers' Angels. You truly are an Angel, giving up free time you could be spending on your two boys each time you write a letter or make a box. It always brought a smile to my face and I will be forever grateful. Please know that I appreciated everything and all your efforts. It's Americans like yourself that makes soldiers like myself continue to serve and sacrifice some of our freedom so that you may sleep well at night. Thank you! Thank you!!"

April is National Card & Letter Writing Month

Did you know that April is National Card & Letter Writing Month? The U.S. Postal Service originally started the celebration as a weeklong event, but in 2001 decided to expand the celebration to the entire month of April. Their hope is to improve writing skills and literacy, as well as to preserve the tradition of writing, sending and receiving letters, postcards and greeting cards. What does this mean at Soldiers' Angels? It means that now is a great time to commit to writing by joining the Soldiers' Angels Letter Writing Team or the Soldiers' Angels Cards Plus Team! These teams are a great way to continue the tradition of writing and also bring a smile to the face of a service member or veteran!

Saluting Veteran Patients

The week of February 13th is National Salute to Veteran Patient Week, a time set aside to express appreciation to Veterans, increase community awareness of the role of the VA medical center, and encourage citizens to become involved. Soldiers’ Angels is one of the few non-profit agencies approved to work within VA Hospitals and Medical Centers and our volunteers gain so much from talking to and serving veteran patients. Here are just a few of the veteran patients Soldiers' Angels volunteers have the pleasure of interacting with.

Valentine's for Veterans

Every year we receive thousands of Valentine’s Day cards addressed to service members and veterans. Sadly, since the cost to distribute these cards is so high, we are not able to provide enough funding to get these cards to our military and veteran heroes so they can feel the love.

But this year you can help us spread the love!

All you need to do is include $1 per Valentine you send! This will help us cover the cost of packing & mailing boxes of Valentine’s Day cards to deployed troops overseas & to VA Hospitals! Email info@soldiersangels.org for details. Mail your cards & $1 per card to: Soldiers’ Angels 2700 NE Loop 410, Suite 310, San Antonio, Texas 78217

Fourth-Graders Create Club to Support Soldiers' Angels

Most fourth grade students spend their time thinking about homework, the latest video game, or what they are going to do at recess. But a group of fourth graders in Minnesota decided it was time to do their part to support wounded service members. Late last year, they formed a "Veterans Club" and began raising money for wounded heroes. To spread the word about their mission, the children sold brownies, Christmas cookies, cupcakes, lemon bars, and muffins by the dozen and half dozen. In total the fourth graders raised over $200 and ultimately donated the money to Soldiers' Angels. Photo credit: Ellarry Prentice

Participants "adopt" an eligible military family and provide gifts for the children and a grocery gift card for the family to purchase their holiday meal. But don't worry-- you can still help provide holiday help for the families who have requested support! Visit our GoFundMe account here and donate whatever you can to the program! Through your generous donations on GoFundMe, families that are not adopted by our Angel volunteers will still receive holiday help from Soldiers' Angels.

Why We Do What We Do

Hearing first-hand accounts of how Soldiers' Angels has helped to support our service members and veterans is what motivates us to continue doing what we do. Below is a message from a service member supported by several of our teams: Angel Bakers, Deployed Adoptions, Cards Plus and Letter Writing.

"From the bottom of my heart, Thank you. Thanks for all the cards and letters that your volunteers have sent me while deployed to Afghanistan. They were amazing. I don't know how I will ever write them all back. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. I wanted to let you know I am leaving Afghanistan.  My mission is complete and my team and I are headed home. Please remove my name from the mailing list, so you can make room for another deployed Soldier. Your volunteers are amazing, they have really been a boost to me and I wanted you all to know that I am grateful for your support. Take care, God bless you all and keep up the fantastic work."

Sailors' Angel

We receive many thank you notes from the service members and veterans that we serve-- but it makes it even more special when those service members return home safely from deployment and then sign up to become Angels themselves! Take a look at this great thank you note from a Sailor turned Angel:

"Good evening,
This message is just a Thank You message to all of the Volunteers and partners of Soldiers' Angels. I am an Active Duty Sailor and while I was deployed Soldiers' Angels helped me through my deployment with the Care Packages and endless letters. I tried to thank everyone who reached out to me until the mission ramped up and I couldn't always reply in a timely manner. I still feel guilty about those I couldn't reach out to. But I am paying it forward. I have always taken care of my own Sailors who were deployed but I know how much care packages can improve morale so I registered to become an "Angel" so I can reach out to more people. Thank you so much for all you do. I look forward to helping my brothers and sisters in arms. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!"

This leaves 700 military families still at risk of not having a happy holiday season. Can you help us raise the funds to provide a happy holiday for the remaining families?

This is where the Soldiers' Angels Adopt-A-Family program comes in. Through this program, Soldiers' Angels matches military families with sponsors who "adopt" the family for the holidays. The sponsor will provide presents for the children and a grocery gift card or prepaid Visa gift card for the family to purchase their holiday dinner and trimmings.

All military families registering must complete registration by Tuesday, December 8th at 5:00 pm CT. Family Registrations will close at that time.  Volunteers may still register to adopt families after that date.

Soldiers' Angels Honors Gold Star Mother's Day

Did you know that there are actually two Mother’s Days in the United States? The first one is celebrated in May – the standard Mother’s Day we all celebrate. But the second Mother’s Day is one many Americans are not aware of. It’s called Gold Star Mother’s Day and it is observed on the last Sunday of September each year. Gold Star Mother’s Day is a day for people to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter while serving the United States Armed Forces.

The holiday is celebrated by American Gold Star Mothers, a Veterans service organization of mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country.

This week on our blog we highlight a Gold Star family and talk about how the Soldiers’ Angels Living Legends team helps families who endure a military loss.

International Paper Donation & Packing Event

Soldiers' Angels and International Paper teamed up to pack 1,000 non perishable lunch kits for homeless veterans in the San Antonio area. International Paper donated everything needed for this event: from the boxes to the food! They designed, created, and donated a special lunch box as well as a larger box that will perfectly fit 24 of these special lunch boxes. They also provided all of the food items used to fill these lunch boxes, which was purchased from the San Antonio Food Bank! The packaging event, which took place on September 23rd at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, included 100 officers and spouses of the company who were in town for the International Paper company conference. It only took about 40 minutes for the 100 employees to package 1,000 lunch kits!

In addition to all of the great work International Paper did to provide these lunches to our homeless veterans, they also made a generous donation of $10,000 to Soldiers' Angels. And not only did they donate enough boxes for this packing event, but donated an additional 5,200 lunch boxes and an additional 1,045 packing boxes-- valued at $6,897 of In-Kind donations!

Thanks to everyone at International Paper who took the time to give back to our veterans! Your generosity is helping us take our mission even further: "May No Soldier Go Unloved!" A big thanks as well to the Soldiers' Angels volunteers who spent the morning of the event setting up the ballroom at the Hyatt!

Angel on the Move

Amy Krome became a Soldiers' Angels volunteer in March of 2005. After the tragic events of 9/11, Amy wanted to do something to give back, but her disability of cerebral palsy made it difficult for her to find the best niche. She found her place at Soldiers' Angels and now, in her 10th anniversary of being an 'Angel' to our military service members and veterans, Amy is taking on another challenge to support our brave men and women in uniform and our veterans. On September 5th and 6th, Amy is going to bike a little over 8 miles through Legacy Trail in Lexington, KY to raise funds for Soldiers' Angels.

Amy's goal is to raise $3,000 during the bike ride named "Angel on the Move." Her mission is even receiving some attention in the Medical community. A recent article in Emergency Physicians Monthly highlights her upcoming adventure: http://epmonthly.com/article/another-krome-sets-the-bar/

To read more about Amy, take a look at our blog post: http://soldiersangels.org/angel-blog.html/2015/08/06/Angel-on-the-Move/

To help Amy reach her goal, donate here: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/AmyKrome/Angelonthemove

Thank you to this very special Angel! Amy, your hard-work and dedication to our service members, veterans and Soldiers' Angels is truly inspiring.

Help Us Ship Coffee to Troops in Afghanistan

As combat operations continue to decline, many facilities have closed down in Afghanistan. The soldiers have little to no access to goods. Guess what the one thing is the troops have been asking for? ......... Coffee!

Unfortunately, coffee is one of the hardest commodities to get donated and shipped overseas! There is good news and bad news. Soldiers' Angels has thousands of bags of coffee on hand, most of which will go to VA Hospitals. We would like to get as much oversees to the troops as we can afford to ship.

We need your help to get this coffee to the troops in combat! Click the link to donate and help us get coffee to American troops!

Showing Support for Veterans is What We Do

Most people know all about the care packages and letters our angels send to deployed troops overseas--- but what many people don't know is that we also provide support within many of the VA Hospitals across the country. Soldiers' Angels has VA Representatives at these hospitals who work hard to help improve the lives of injured, ill or wounded vets.

Below is a list of just some of the ways these VA Reps provide support:

  • Luncheons
  • Movie Nights
  • Visits
  • Requests
  • Holiday Parties
  • Hygiene Kits

This is just the tip of the iceberg! There are many more ways our VA Reps provide support.

To learn more about how our VA Rep's provide support in VA Hospitals across the nation, read the full story on our Angel Blog here.

Interested in getting involved with our VA Support Programs? Find out more on our website here.
