Military life can present many unique challenges for military children. From a parent deploying to the entire family PCSing, the schedules and routines of military children are constantly being disrupted. Those disruptions can often lead to unhealthy eating habits and even other unhealthy choices, such as drugs and alcohol. Guest blogger, Amanda Henderson, takes a look at some ways to incorporate healthful choices and activities into busy schedules.

Thanks to all of the incredible support we received from businesses, groups, and individuals across the country, we met our goal of collecting 1,000 blankets for deployed service members and veteran patients in VA Hospitals! It was very close... but thanks to a last-minute push for help to meet our goal, we received 1,002 blankets. The blankets will be shipped to deployed service members and personally delivered to veteran patients staying in VA Hospitals. Although our official blanket drive is over, please don't hesitate to send us blankets throughout the year. With a presence in more than 35 VA Hospitals across the country, blankets are one of the best comfort items we can provide to veterans to bring them warmth and comfort during their hospital stay!
It's easy to take hygiene items for granted. If you run out of toothpaste, just run to a store and refill your supply. For veteran patients staying in VA Hospitals and homeless veterans, that simple task is not quite so easy. Soldiers' Angels volunteers distribute thousands of prepackaged hygiene kits every year to provide veterans with essential hygiene items. Later this year, we will be packing and shipping 15,000 care items, including 5,000 hygiene kits, to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Soldiers' Angels. In Part 3 of our special 3-part blog series, we take a look at the reason behind hygiene kits as well as how we're making it all happen. Learn more about Providing Essentials For Our Veterans Through Hygiene Kits.
It is no secret that veteran homelessness is an issue in our country. With tens of thousands of homeless veterans and more than a million veterans considered "at risk," the numbers are shocking. Through the Soldiers' Angels Hunger Relief Program, thousands of Box Lunches are distributed to VA Caseworkers who provide the food to veterans who may not otherwise know where their next meal is coming from. Later this year, we will be packing and shipping 15,000 care items, including 5,000 box lunches, to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Soldiers' Angels. In Part 2 of our special 3-part blog series, we take a look at the process and planning of getting these Box Lunches assembled and into the hands of the veterans that need them most. Learn more about What it Takes to Supply a Box Lunch to a Veteran.
Ever wondered what it takes to ship a care package to a deployed service member? Later this year, we will be packing and shipping 15,000 care items, including 5,000 care packages, to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Soldiers' Angels. In Part 1 of our special 3-part blog series, we take an in-depth look at the process of getting those care packages to our troops— from collecting the items to the service member hearing their name called during mail call— learn more about The Care Package Journey.

It can be a difficult feat to find a way to give back as a family. With busy schedules and varying interests, getting everyone in the family to participate in the same activity is most definitely a challenge. But with some dedicated research, it can be done! That's how the Ayers Family found Soldiers' Angels. A retired military family, they knew their passion was to provide support to the military community. They also enjoy quilting together as a family— so when they saw the Soldiers' Angels Blanket Drive, they knew it was a perfect fit. Read their story here and get some inspiration on finding a way your family can come together to give back.
June 27 may seem like any other day for many people. But for those suffering from PTSD, today is a day to stand up and spread the word about this debilitating and often deadly disorder. Today is National PTSD Awareness Day: a day to talk openly about PTSD, discuss causes and symptoms, and, most importantly, encourage those who may be suffering in silence to reach out and ask for help. In observance of this important day of awareness, we present a special blog written by one of our team members, David. After serving as a Combat Medic in the Army for six years during the early years of Operation Iraqi Freedom, David has endured the effects of service-related PTSD for the past 12 years. Speaking publicly about his disorder for the first time, he has agreed to share his story with us in hopes that it will encourage others to do "the bravest thing that those of us that suffer from this illness can do"— seek help. Read his story here.
PTSD can be debilitating for those who suffer with it. It can break up families, lead to substance abuse, and in some cases end in suicide. But our heroes don’t have to suffer in silence. There are effective treatments and many resources out there for those who suffer. Today is PTSD Awareness Day. Please share this list of PTSD Resources on all your social channels. You never know who may be suffering in silence that may benefit from the help these resources can provide.
Soldiers' Angels hosted the first of what will now be a monthly Veteran Mobile Food Distribution in Orlando, Florida on Friday, June 15. The event provided approximately 50 pounds of food to 200 veterans and their families. This event is now held monthly in 6 cities across the country: Atlanta, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Denver, Colorado; Detroit, Michigan; Orlando, Florida; and San Antonio, Texas. If you are a veteran in need of food assistance and living in one of those cities, click here to sign up to receive text notifications about future food distribution events.
The Soldiers' Angels Special Operations Forces Team (SOFT) is a group of veteran Angels whose mission is to support the elite military service members that make up the United States Special Operations Forces. As you can imagine, Special Operations Forces troops rarely get any pampering. They are trained to go on special missions that tend to be in remote, hard-to-reach locations. It is not uncommon that Angels on our SOF Team never hear anything back from the service members they support. The sensitivity and remoteness of the missions of these service members often hinder them from having the time or ability to stay in contact with their Angel. That is what makes this 'Thank You' to our SOF Team so special.
The type of support we provide here at Soldiers’ Angels is not the only support needed by our military, their families, and our veterans. We are often asked about resources for financial support as, unfortunately, many of our heroes and their families fall on hard times during or after deployment. Although there are many organizations out there that provide this type of assistance, we put together a reference list of charities that we have worked with and vetted. Click through to our blog to learn more about how these organizations can help you.
