Using the Special Forces of Music to Help American Soldiers
"I was suicidal, broken into pieces. My life was saved by Soldiers' Angels… They helped me find a better way." - veteran & professional musician Buddy Lee
Who We Are and What We Do
Operation Harmony is a partnership with Yamaha Music & Wellness Institute to give American troops the ability and opportunity to heal and thrive through music. The Institute strives to improve quality of life through research, education and programs that focus on active music participation. Through Operation Harmony, this includes providing guitar and keyboard courses to wounded warriors and supplying instruments to service members on military bases throughout the world.
The partnership of Soldiers' Angels and Yamaha through Operation Harmony includes:
- The Karl T. Bruhn Memorial Music Center at the Soldiers’ Angels Support Center in San Antonio, which hosts piano and guitar group instruction
- Deploying The Clavinova Connection a wellness-based piano course from Yamaha, to veterans’ facilities throughout the United States
- Developing music-making opportunities, including performing and recordings sessions, for returning veterans
- Expanding Operation Soft Landing, a program that sends new guitars to soldiers in need around the world
How it Helps
Music serves a major role in physical and emotional healing, and is a way for wounded warriors to regain strength and happiness that will ease their transition back into life after war. These healing effects of music are also helpful for combat veterans in general, and music-making can help deployed heroes cope with the multiple strains of deployment and combat.
Operation Harmony uses music to improve quality of life and reduce the impact of stress, support healing for veterans facing extraordinary physical and emotional challenges, and provide an environment to strengthen bonds and build family harmony.

Thank you so much for the guitars! I've already got them on two different FOBs and have used each for teaching soldiers how to play. I have one out with the Airmen in the picture at a small little FOB where they have taken one of the biggest attacks in our Province. Prior to that guitar arriving on their FOB they didn't have a guitar to share. He was so excited to get the guitar and be able to sit with his buddies and spend time playing with them...The guitars have been even a bigger hit than I had imagined. Not knowing they were coming, and then to have them pop up was such a great surprise, I used the story of getting them at mail call in my sermon last Sunday. The soldiers enjoyed the gift and the story. Thank you for the guitars, and thank you for all you do! - CH (MAJ) Ben
