Living Legends

Thank you for the beautiful Pygmy Date Palm... Please thank everyone that made this possible. It will always remind us of Joe. It will be placed it at his favorite placed in my parents house, a back room where he would love to play his drums. - The Casanova Family

Who We Are and What We Do:

The Living Legends team conducts one of the most delicate and demanding missions of Soldiers' Angels: comforting the loved ones left behind when a warrior falls on the battlefield. Our goal is to make sure families and friends of America's fallen heroes know that they are supported and that their loved ones' sacrifices are honored and respected.

Living Legends began in May 2005 with a very small team of seven dedicated angels, and it has grown significantly since then.

Members of this special team send sympathy cards to grieving families to convey our compassion and heavy hearts--we reach out and wrap our "Angel Wings" around the families and loved ones who have lost so much. We also offer each family a wreath or live memorial tree to be planted as a symbol of our deepest sympathies and respect for their loss. Our hope is that this tree will grow and flourish, giving the family and friends a living monument to the honor and bravery of their loved one.  In addition, we send out "Remembering" emails or cards on the anniversary of a fallen hero's death, so that their families know we will never forget them and their sacrifice.

The Living Legends team represents every member of Soldiers' Angels, contacting families on the entire organization; sometimes we stay in touch for many months at the family's request. The work is emotionally demanding, but deeply rewarding.

How to Help

If you would like to participate in this very special team, simply join Soldiers' Angels. Click here to get started!  After you become an Angel, log in to ApprovedAngels.com and sign up for the team (if you don't receive a response within one week, please email; please note that we require team members to have adopted a soldier and been with Soldiers' Angels for six months before joining this team.  If you are a Gold Star Family or have experience with grieving military families, contact us at the email below to request membership without the six-month wait).  If you would like more information on the Living Legends team or know of someone who could benefit from Living Legends support, please email livinglegends@soldiersangels.org.

Special Projects

Portraits of Memory - Living Legends coordinates with artist Michael Reagan, who works individually with families to create gift portraits of their fallen loved ones.

Patches the Bear - To support and encourage children who have lost a loved one to war, Living Legends works closely with PatchesKids.org.  Patches Kids supplies grieving children with a cuddly stuffed animal named "Patches the Bear," who comes with special tools to help them cope with and express their feelings.

Memorial Wall Hangings - Families of the fallen with very young or unborn children receive a special quilted memorial of their loved one to display in the child's room (see below).  These unique wall hangings are handmade by Living Legends Angel Sharon, who designs each one to be a unique expression of the child and the parent they have lost.

Fallen Heroes Blog - A small biography of every Living Legend Hero is posted on our special Fallen Heroes blog. We honor the fallen by sharing with you how they chose to live their lives in service to the United States of America and to each one of us. May we never forget all that they have sacrificed so that we might be free.

Impact

Your comforting thoughts mean so much to me...Your sympathetic comments will be memorialized and share with his sons, ...who will learn how brave and special their father was. - Cheryl

Our family would be honored to be a part of the Living Legends Team.  When our son Thomas was KIA 26 May, 2011 the letters and support we received from SA were a Godsend.  We know what a family goes thru and want to let them know they are not alone in their grief and every year after.  Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to give back. - Marla

I have to say, seeing all the cards and letters pour in from Angels all over the country when we lost my friend Ben in January was one of the most amazing things ever.  Knowing that people all over--even if they didn't know him personally--appreciated his sacrifice... Well, it helped a lot. That's why I joined the Living Legends Team. I'd been with SA and adopting soldiers for three years, but seeing firsthand what this team meant to those left behind...nothing beat that. - Jen

...In the days, weeks, and months following the loss of my husband, my son and I have received countless cards, letters, and notes from Soldiers' Angels around the US, filled with heartfelt condolences, prayers, and deep expressions of gratitude for my husband's ultimate sacrifice and the resulting sacrifice of our family. I cannot begin to express how deeply touched I've been to read each tearful word sent with love from Angels across the the continent...I've been inspired by you and will now be joining your ranks in my time of healing and beyond. I hope I can offer someone even a fraction of the love and support that was shown in honor of my husband.  With love and gratitude, Erin (January 2010)

To all Soldiers Angels that took the time to write our family, we sincerely thank you.  Sgt Ronald was killed in Afghaniatan two weeks ago and the cards are still coming. It has reached international as well as the States. We have been comforted by the personal notes and beautiful words expressed. Thank you again for making our deep sorrow bearable. Jim and Rita, January 2010

I want to express my thanks to all the Soldiers’ Angels who have sent cards and notes expressing their sorrow over the loss of my son-in-law…and their gratitude of his service to the American people.  I was aware of the Soldiers’ Angels organization before, but in reading the notes that were included with the cards made this organization and its members more personal…  Again, thank you for your concern and letting the families know that others care very much for their loss.  We can only wish and pray for the day when there will no longer be a need for any more Soldiers’ Angels letters. - Duane, October 2009

On August 4th, 2008 the life of my sweets, Captain Garrett "Tubes" Lawton was cut tragically short by an IED while deployed to Afghanistan.  I immediately began receiving cards and notes of sympathy and appreciation from people all over the United States.  Opening my mailbox and finding it overflowing with cards from hundreds of Soldiers’ Angels lifted my spirits during the most horrific time of my life.  I also received a few near the anniversary of his death.  I have saved all of these for my two boys so they can know that their daddy’s sacrifice was for a grateful nation. - Trish,
“Proud Military Widow” September 2009

I wanted to thank you for all the support given to me after the loss of my soldier...I have heard from over a hundred Angels across the U.S. sending their thoughts and prayers.  Amazing family we belong to, isn't it?? - Soldiers' Angel R., September 2009

I am a stepmom of a “Fallen Angel.” SFC Ronald W. Sawyer was killed by an IED 8-25-09.  It is unbelievable how much support we have received from so many people we have never heard of before!  This is a wonderful thing you are doing! I am hoping, when the dust settles, I can join your group and start helping also. It is relieving to know there really are caring and kind people still out there working just because they feel a need to. You are all truly "Angels" to me. Thank you so much! - Cynthia, September 2009

Donna, Shannon and myself just want to thank you for all you have done for us in our time of grief at the loss of our son and brother. We never knew that so many people would take the time to send cards and donations to some family they never met. It really did mean that somebody cared…When we get back on our feet and in the right mind set you will be hearing from us again. We to would like to help others in their time of need to let them know they are not alone. Thanks again and may God Bless America and the Soldiers' Angels. - James, August 2009

As the first anniversary of my husband’s death rapidly approaches, I want to say thank to each of you for your support over the past year. I know so many of you sent cards and e-mails when Rich died; while I don’t remember what each one said, I can tell you that I felt comforted by them. To this day, they remain in a box on my desk where, on bad days, I can see them and remember that you are all there supporting me. – Eileen

My wife and I would like to thank everyone for their support and cards in the death of our son. We were overwhelmed at all the response, every card or letter was very much appreciated. Our son died doing what he loved and we are so proud of him. Please check out his web site www.jason-burkholder.com.  Sincere Thanks, Bruce & Diane Burkholder

Patti, just wanted to let you know that the two trees sent to us in Bedford, MA survived the winter.  The little dogwoods for John Hart (airborne) and Travis Desiato (marines killed from our town) are planted at the entrance of the memorial park.  There will be a Memorial Day ceremony where a name stone is dedicated for Travis, who was killed in November in Fallujah.  It will go next to John's, who was killed in Oct. 03 near Kirkuk.  I promised you a picture and will send it as soon as the flowers bloom over there. Anyway, the Harts and the Desiatos wanted to thank you and yours for this fine thought. - Citizen of Bedford

Thank you so much for the cards and letters from everyone that took the time out of their day to pray and remember my family in the loss of our wonderful son, Jason. We could feel the pain and loss of our fellow Americans in the kind and uplifting word that was in the cards and letters. It a made a difference in our grief to know that there are thousands of others that have felt the same loss that we have felt. Again thank you for all the support and kindness you have shown us and our family. - Cathy and Rick P.
