Cooking with the Wounded
What started out as one person working with Soldiers' Angels to cook a steak dinner for the wounded at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center has grown into something more. Cooking with the Wounded is not just about cooking food for our troops, it is about cooking with them.
The effort has five phases:
Phase I: Steak Dinner at Landstuhl. Accomplished (see pic)
Phase II: The ladies at the Yellow Bowl Bakery do an event at Walter Reed and one at Landstuhl. In Progress.
Phase III: Get other guest chefs to take part, and make it a quarterly event at Landstuhl, with "practice" events to be held at various locations within the United States. Where possible, the events will allow wounded and others who want to help to do so. Cooking for the Wounded founder Blake Powers writes:
We need chefs. We need top chefs. The challenge is:
Cook a complete meal for 125 people at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, using the resources on hand and buying on the local as much as possible. Give a talk about how you got started, trials and tribulations of opening your own place, and/or about the type of food you cook. Leave the kitchens of the wounded warrior barracks well stocked. Raise the money for this, travel, and participation by two of the project leaders. If you want, you can do one event in the US as a warmup.
Are you up to the challenge? If so, drop us a line if you think you've got what it takes.
Phase IV: Add in an educational component where the guest chefs discuss how they got started, different jobs within the restaurant and food industries, and running their own businesses.
Phase V: With the aid of chefs, food industry leaders, venture capitalists, and others: create a mentoring program for warriors who want to start their own food business; create a training program for wounded who want to learn a new job skill in the food industry; and, continue to foster quarterly or more frequent events to provide a variety of culinary experiences to our warriors, with a particular emphasis on the wounded and those downrange.
